Embodied Design

The Embodied Design Research Group conducts research in a newly framed field that resides in the intersection of human-centred design, embedded systems design, and service design.

The fundamental perspective of Embodied Design research to approach human-world interaction and design phenomena is inspired by the notion “Embodied Interaction” by Paul Dourish. He employed the term to bridge the gap between the Cartesian, or ‘disembodied’, way to design, which has been prominent in the field of human-computer interaction, and the real physical and social interaction that people actually engage in with designs.

While advocating ‘research-through-design,’ Embodied Design Research employs also several other theoretical underpinnings. Most notably these are pragmatism, Actor-Network Theory, Activity Theory and Ethnomethodology. With the assistance of the terminologies that these theories give for design research, the Embodied Design Research Group will develop new sensitivities into the discourse in and around human-design interaction.

The researchers in the group come from a diverse set of backgrounds ranging from industrial design, computer science, embedded systems engineering, architecture, and anthropology to psychology.
